ARRANGE THE TINDER AND KINDLING

Start by placing a small stack of kindling in the center of the fireplace. Kindling is comprised of sticks and small pieces of wood that measure 10 to 12 inches in length. Criss-cross the kindling pieces to allow air to circulate through the twigs. Crumple sheets of newspaper or brown paper bag (tinder) into balls the size of grapefruits or roll them into long 12-inch batons. Tuck the paper beneath and around the kindling. Light the paper. Within a minute, the kindling should be steadily burning.

ADD LOGS

Dry hardwood logs burn longer and with less ash and smoke than damp softer woods do. Lay a couple of split logs above or next to the flame but not directly on top of it. As the fire gets bigger, add a few logs at a time, leaving at least an inch of space between them. These spaces envelope the cool air and fan the fire.

MAKE IT SMELL NICE

Try burning one or two cinnamon sticks, orange peels (the oils smell citrusy, not sweet), or sprinkle the outer edges of the logs with fresh rosemary to fill the air with a woody pine scent.
