The first Father’s Day celebration occurred in the state of Washington on June 9, 1910, thanks to Sonora Smart Dodd, a grateful daughter who wanted to honor her Civil War veteran dad who raised six children himself. While several presidents tried to make it an official holiday, it took 56 years until President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June a day to honor fathers. In 1972, President Richard M. Nixon designated the day an official national holiday when he signed the proclamation into law, 58 years after Mother’s Day became official!
